Conspiracy Theories
Skeptic Presents: You Can’t Handle The Truther
The other day an old friend stopped by in the course of one of those catching up conversations I discovered that this old friend in addition to believing in various conspiracy theories around Big Pharma, the Monsanto/GMO Manufactroversy etc. he also believes in the mother-of-all-ridiculous conspiracy theories,…The 9/11 Truth Movement.
In other words he thinks that the Bush/Chenny administration intentionally orchestrated the 9/11 attacks and brought down the Twin Towers in a controlled demolition so that they could get what they wanted, which I guess was the war in Afganistan and Iraq. After arguing against so many of his points specifically (as an ex-firefighter and an ex-builder who knows a little bit about both areas) I pointed out the sheer stupid ridiculousness absurdity of the of the “truther” premise in terms of Bayesian Probabilities.
Following Michael Shermer who is the editor of Skeptic Magazine and the author of Why People Believe Weird Things: Pseudo-Science, Superstition, and Bogus Notions of Our Time I just discovered this great video this morning: Skeptic Presents: You Can’t Handle The Truther – YouTube which I think takes that Bayesian Probabilistic look and satirizes the absolute ridiculousness and absurdity of the 9/11 Truther thinking.
Additionally for those of you who aren’t all ready familiar with the great YouTube video series “Mr. Deity” (http://www.mrdeity.com/) the bit is written and produced by Michael Shermer along with Brian Keith Dalton who is “Mr. Deity” himself and he also directs the piece. And the video also features Sean Douglas & Amy Rohren from the “Mr. Deity” acting ensemble.

- Tea Party was not victimized: On the IRS list for scrutiny, ‘Progressive’ & anything that ‘appears anti-Republican’ | FreakOutNation
Bloomberg News and the Associated Press obtained documents showing that “progressive,” “Israel” and “occupy” appeared on versions of “be-on-the-lookout” lists (also called BOLO) used by employees in the Internal Revenue Service office that reviewed tax-exempt applications in an effort to coordinate similar issues. My favorite on the list is anything that “appears as anti-Republican.”
Tea Party groups feigning to be victimized seems to be falling apart. But, the Tea Party groups will continue with their temper tantrums nevertheless. ‘Obummer targeted me!’ (read the complete article…)

Economics & The Economy
- The fundamental law of capitalism is that if… – Liberals Are Cool
The fundamental law of capitalism is that if workers have no money, businesses have no customers. That’s why the extreme, and widening, wealth gap in our economy presents not just a moral challenge, but an economic one, too. In a capitalist system, rising inequality creates a death spiral of falling demand that ultimately takes everyone down.
Low-wage jobs are fast replacing middle-class ones in the U.S. economy. Sixty percent of the jobs lost in the last recession were middle-income, while 59 percent of the new positions during the past two years of recovery were in low-wage industries that continue to expand such as retail, food services, cleaning and health-care support. By 2020, 48 percent of jobs will be in those service sectors. - The Most Bullish Gold Price Targets – Business Insider
