]]>Bruce gave this to the producers of the first Harry Potter movie for possible inclusion. It went unused, but has been widely written about in recent months by those who have heard it from Odds & Sods bootleg
You wake me in the night and your tears falling down, come let me dry them for you
I wish I could tell a story, chase away all those ghosts you’ve got inside of you
A story of heroes that fight on at any cost of a kingdom of love to be won or lost
We’ll fight here together ’til victory is won, come take my hand ’til the morning comes
Just close your eyes
I’ll stand by you always, always, always
I’ll stand by you always, always, always
I know here in the dark tomorrow can seem so very far away
Here the ghosts and the goblins can rise from your dreams to steal your heart away
Together we’ll chase those thieves that won’t leave you alone out from under the bed, out from over our home
And when the light comes we’ll laugh my love about the things that the night had us so frightened of
And until then
I’ll stand by you always, always, always
I’ll stand by you always, always, always
Now I know it can feel like you’re slipping away, at night you’ll get lost in that deep dark place
We’ll let the night come and do what it may, together we’ll find the courage, we’ll find faith
Until you awake
I’ll stand by you always, always, always
I’ll stand by you always, always, always
I’ll stand by you always
I’ll stand by you always
I’ll stand by you always, always, always
I’ll stand by you always, always, always
I’ll stand by you always, always, always
I’ll stand by you always, always, always

]]>It Goes Like It Goes…
Ain’t no miracle being born
people doin’ it everyday
aint no miracle growin’ old
people just roll that waySo it goes like it goes
and the river flows
and time it rolls right on
and maybe what’s good
gets a little bit better
and maybe what’s bad gets goneBless the child of the workin’ man
she knows too soon who she is
and bless the hands of a workin’ man
he knows his soul is hisSo it goes like it goes
and the river flows
and time it rolls right on
and maybe whats good
gets a little bit better
and maybe what’s bad gets goneYeah it goes like it goes
like the river flows
and time keeps rollin’ on
and maybe what’s good
gets a little bit better
and maybe what’s bad gets gone

]]>I first heard the song off of Griffith’s The MCA Years A Retrospective and recall being stunned by it the very first time I ever heard it. It a song that continues to grow and fill my mind with both warmth and melancholy every time I hear it. While I can say I think my favorite rendition of the song is the version on The MCA Years A Retrospective I also think this video of a performance of Maura O’Connell with Nanci Griffith – Trouble In The Fields (embedding disabled) is brilliant . The video I’ve embedded here while not quite as goo an audio track as I would like is still a great rendition by Nanci Griffith herself:
Songwriters: Nanci Griffith & Rick West
Baby I know that we’ve got trouble in the fields
When the bankers swarm like locust out there turning away our yield
The trains roll by our silos, silver in the rain
They leave our pockets full of nothing
But our dreams and the golden grainHave you seen the folks in line downtown at the station
They’re all buying their ticket out and talking the great depression
Our parents had their hard times fifty years ago
When they stood out in these empty fields in dust as deep as snow[Chorus:]
And all this trouble in our fields
If this rain can fall, these wounds can heal
They’ll never take our native soil
But if we sell that new John Deere
And then we’ll work these crops with sweat and tears
You’ll be the mule I’ll be the plow
Come harvest time we’ll work it out
There’s still a lotta love, here in these troubled fieldsThere’s a book up on the shelf about the dust bowl days
And there’s a little bit of you and a little bit of me
In the photos on every page
Now our children live in the city and they rest upon our shoulders
They never want the rain to fall or the weather to get colder[Chorus:]
And all this trouble in our fields
If this rain can fall, these wounds can heal
They’ll never take our native soil
But if we sell that new John Deere
And then we’ll work these crops with sweat and tears
You’ll be the mule I’ll be the plow
Come harvest time we’ll work it out
There’s still a lotta love, here in these troubled fieldsYou’ll be the mule I’ll be the plow
Come harvest time we’ll work it out
There’s still a lotta love, here in these troubled fields
