Architecture school is a long haul and we all know it. Whether you get a 5-year professional degree or choose to take on a few years of graduate school (or both), it’s a grueling process. I don’t know if this is from his book but I suspect it is. The quote is Miyamoto Musashi, the author of The Book of Five Rings a great book on strategy, tactics, and philosophy. Just the other week I found my old paperback copy of the book that I read traveling the NYC subways back in 1982-83 (the original is circa 1645) and put it back on my home office bookshelves. I know the date because the bookmark in it was my receipt from the GCT bookstore that was where a Zaro’s Family Bakery is now. Interestingly the subtile on my little paperback edition is “The Real Art of Japanese Management”.

We have all seen the famous quote: “Don’t believe everything you see attributed to me on the internet — Abraham Lincoln

Well Bruce Lee is also very abused and misquoted. We often see this supposed quote from him on click bait on FaceBook —”Stop wasting time in playing a role or a concept. Instead, learn to ACTUALIZE YOURSELF, your potential.” That is not what he said and in my mind diminishes what he did say:

In life, what more can you ask for than to be real? To fulfill one’s potential instead of wasting energy on [attempting to] actualize one’s dissipating image, which is not real and an expenditure of one’s vital energy. We have great work ahead of us, and it needs devotion and much, much energy. To grow, to discover, we need involvement, which is something I experience every day — sometimes good, sometimes frustrating. No matter what, you must let your inner light guide you out of the darkness.
